Department Aims

In the History Department at Our Lady of Lourdes we have the following key aims.

  • To make the study of history enjoyable and accessible to all.

  • To establish an enthusiasm in pupils for relevant historical events.

  • To promote an ethos of inclusion and participation.

  • To develop key life skills such the thinking skills and personal capabilities.                    

  • To develop historical skills.

Key Stage 3 History

All pupils study History at Key Stage 3, during their first 3 years a number of interesting and relevant topics are studied. There are also a number of workshops and visits for pupils to take part in.

Key Stage 4 History

History is a popular choice at GCSE. Pupils study the specification from the CCEA exam board.

Unit 1 Section A: Modern World Study in Depth
Option 1: Life in Nazi Germany, 1933–45


Unit 1 Section B: Local Study

Option 2: Changing Relations: Northern Ireland and its Neighbours, 1965–98

Unit 1 is worth 60% overall. It includes source based questions and a mixture of essay style and shorter questions.

Unit 2: Outline Study
International Relations, 1945–2003
Unit 2 is worth 25% overall. It includes essay style and source based question.

Careers
History develops a range of important skills and qualities including fantastic communication, organisational and interpersonal skills. The study of history can leaves students open to a range of career options. Many history students who go on to third level education find themselves in professions such as law, journalism, banking, politics and the civil service, to name a few.
